MILPITAS, Calif.Nov. 10, 2016 /PRNewswire/ — Intersil Corporation (NASDAQ: ISIL), a leading provider of innovative power management and precision analog solutions, today introduced two new USB-C™ buck-boost battery chargers that support bidirectional power delivery in ultrabooks, tablets, power banks and other mobile products. The single-chip ISL9238 and ISL9238A battery chargers replace competitive two-chip solutions to reduce customer bill of materials (BOM) costs by up to 40%. Both ICs employ Intersil’s patented R3™ modulation technology to extend battery life and deliver acoustic noise-free operation, superior light-load efficiency and ultra-fast transient response.

The ISL9238 and ISL9238A operate in forward buck, boost or buck-boost mode to fast charge mobile battery packs with up to 4-cell Li-ion batteries. They also support USB 3.1 On-The-Go (OTG) with 5V/20V reverse buck, boost or buck-boost mode to deliver power out of a USB-C port for charging external devices such as smartphones, headphones or virtual reality goggles. At maximum power, both ICs provide 20V at 5A to the USB-C port for delivery of power up to 100W over a reversible USB Type-C connector cable. The ISL9238A features the same capabilities as the ISL9238, but also includes a different SMBus address for OEMs that want to use both ICs to design systems with dual USB-C ports.

In charging mode, the ISL9238 and ISL9238A take input power from a wide range of DC power sources, including AC/DC charger adapters, USB power delivery (PD) ports and any travel adapter. Both chargers include SMBus and I2C programmable features such as depleted battery trickle charging, and a two-level adapter current limit for turbo-mode events where the charger takes advantage of the adapter’s milliseconds of surge current capability to minimize power draw and extend battery run-time. The ISL9238 and ISL9238A also feature programmable autonomous charging and an end of charge safety timer to stop battery charging.

These ICs power IMVP8-compliant mobile systems using 6th and 7th Gen Intel® Core™ processors.

The high performance and ease of use of the 2-MSPS, 18-bit AD4003 and 16-bit AD4000 SAR ADCs greatly ease the efforts of system designers tasked with achieving optimum performance in data acquisition designs within a shorter design cycle, and without the need for making often difficult and conflicting technical tradeoffs. Features such as high input-impedance mode and span-compression mode reduce the design challenge associated with the ADC driver stage and increase the flexibility of amplifier selection. The high input-impedance mode allows the use of low power precision amplifiers to directly drive the ADC, and reduces the signal-chain power demands. In addition, the internal overvoltage protection removes the need for external protection devices, and the span compression enables the ADC driver stage to operate from the same supply rail as the ADC, thus simplifying power management. This combination supports increased channel density while lowering the system-level power requirements, without compromising performance.

The AD400x series includes 20-, 18-, and 16-bit SAR ADCs with speed options from 500 kSPS to 2 MSPS.

Intersil Announces Industry’s First Rad Tolerant 36V Instrumentation Amplifier with Integrated Differential ADC Driver

Milpitas, Calif., July 11, 2016 – Intersil Corporation (NASDAQ: ISIL), a leading provider of innovative power management and precision analog solutions, today introduced the industry’s first radiation tolerant 36V instrumentation amplifier (in-amp) featuring an integrated differential analog-to-digital converter (ADC) driver. The high performance ISL70617SEH differential input, rail-to-rail output in-amp delivers the industry’s highest signal processing performance for low-level sensor telemetry data critical to communication satellites. Its high integration and best-in-class performance reduces system size, weight and power (SWAP) costs, and accelerates time to market.

The ISL70617SEH enables higher common-mode rejection ratio (CMRR) and power supply rejection ratio (PSRR) than the competition, at all gain settings. Designers can easily program the in-amp’s gain from 0.1 to 10,000 using two external resistors. The device is wafer-by-wafer guaranteed to 75krad (Si) with a low dose rate exposure of 10mrad/sec, which more closely resembles the space environment than the high dose rate testing used with competitive devices. The ISL70617SEH leverages Intersil’s proprietary silicon on insulator process to provide single event latch-up (SEL) and single event burnout (SEB) robustness of 60MeV in heavy ion environments. And its single event transient (SET) performance of <10usec eliminates the need for extra filtering.

The ISL70517SEH joins the ISL70617SEH, and offers similar features but implements a differential input and rail-to-rail single-ended output. Both in-amps allow designers to power the input/output stages from different supplies using individual power supply pins. Designers are able to take the input signals riding on a high common-mode voltage and level shift them to a low voltage device. For example, Intersil’s in-amps can protect downstream ICs from high voltage signals by tying the amplifier’s rail-to-rail output to an ADC’s low voltage power supply. This also preserves the ADC maximum input dynamic range and eliminates ADC input overdrive.

US Air Force Awards Northrop Grumman GPS III Space Vehicle Alternatives Program Study Contract

REDONDO BEACH, Calif., May 10, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The United States Air Force has awarded Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) a 26-month study contract based on the company’s innovative proposal for the next-generation Global Positioning System (GPS) III program. This award follows the Air Force’s request for proposals seeking potential updates to the GPS system, which has been delivering precise global position, navigation and timing services worldwide for more than two decades.

Northrop Grumman’s submission was based on a navigational payload prototype built and tested over a radio frequency range in 2015, and a mission-tailored space vehicle leveraging the proven GPS supplier base. For its clean sheet design, the company drew on expertise with technology currently operating on Air Force and other Department of Defense satellites.
